Achilles Heel

Many popular expressions in English Language jave interesting backgrounds. When we refer to a person's weak spot as his/her Achilles heel we are recalling the story of the mighty Greek hero of the Trojan War, Achilles, a warrior of unusual strength and valor. The mother of Achilles, in whose veins flowed the blood of the gods, was warned at his birth that her son would die in battle. In great distress, she sought to save her son. In order to diminish his chances of being hurt and give him maximum protection in combat, she dipped the infant in the river Styx. The magic waters touched every part of the child's body except the heel that she held in her hand. Thus it happened many years later that as Achilles started to flee from an attack, a poisoned arrow struck him in the heel, the only spot where he was vulnerable

 

پاشنه آشیل

بسیاری از اصطلاحات معروف زبان انگلیسی پیشینه ی جالبی دارند. زمانیکه نقطه ضعف شخصی را پاشنه آشیل او می نامیم، داستان قهرمان توانمند یونانی در جنگ تروا یعنی آشیله را بیاد می آوریم که رزمنده ای با نیرو و جرئت عجیب بود. به مادر آشیل که در رگهایش خون خدایان جاری بود، در زمان تولد آشیل هشدار داده شد که پسرش در جنگ از بین خواهد رفت. وی با ناراحتی زیاد تلاش کرد که پسرش را نجات دهد. برای اینکه احتمال آسب دیدن پسرش را کاهش دهد و برای او بیشترین حفاظت را در جنگ فراهم آورد وی را در رود استیکس فرو کرد. آبهای جادویی تمام بخشهای بدن بچه را به جز پاشنه ای که مادرش در دست داشت لمس کرد. از این رو اینگونه شد که سالها بعد وقتی که آشیل از حمله ای گریخت تیری زهر آگین به پاشنه اش، یعنی تنها نقطه ی آسیب پذیرش اصابت کرد
